Many individuals may be unable to achieve a restful night's
sleep due to stress, even if they own a comfortable mattress, it
has been claimed.


Relaxation coach Andrew Johnson said two-thirds of adults across
the UK have some form of sleeping difficulties at some time and
this could be having a significant impact on their wellbeing.


Individuals who lead busy lives are more likely to find it
difficult to switch off these niggling thoughts that can descend
upon them come the end of the day, as they have not made the proper
time to process these problems.


He commented: "What happens is they go to bed at night and what they may have
missed during the day - what they might not have had chance to
process - then starts coming to the front of their minds.


"They may start worrying about their money, or their health, or
their children. That is a huge
problem."


Furthermore, the always-on-the-go lifestyle that many people lead
means they are bombarded with information from the moment they wake
until the time they fall asleep, as the development of new
technologies like mobile phones, the internet and tablets has meant
people are never far from work.


Meanwhile, research carried out as part of a collaboration between
students and scientists at the Faculty of Health and Medical
Sciences at the University of Surrey and scientists from Erasmus MC
University Medical Center Rotterdam recently showed a lack of sleep
has the same effect on the immune system as high levels of
stress.


According to the study of 30 young men, those individuals who did
not receive the recommended eight hours per night of sleep
demonstrated higher than expected levels of white blood cells -
highlighting an increased likelihood of those people developed
immune system diseases in the future.
