Did you know that in the UK, 7 million mattresses are disposed of every year? But, only up to 25% of these mattresses are currently recycled. This means that the majority end up in landfills, posing a significant environmental challenge. As the UK’s most trusted sleep brand we know this can’t continue – so we offer a hassle-free, reliable recycling service that recycles your mattress in a professional, accredited facility. Increasing the recycling rate of mattresses will reduce their environmental impact, conserve resources, and support local communities. By choosing to recycle your mattress, you're not only helping the environment but also contributing to the growth of green industries and the creation of green jobs.
Mattress recyclers deconstruct mattresses and sort the components into up to 19 different material types. Steel from the springs can be smelted into new products. Fabrics are shredded and turned into new mattress components. Plastics enter conventional recycling routes. The best recyclers can ensure over 85% of a mattress has a second life. The remaining 15% won’t end up in landfill either, instead they are sent for energy recovery. At Silentnight we know this isn’t an ideal scenario, which is why are continually innovating and working with partners to ensure all materials can become circular.
Before your mattress is recycled, it must be in a dry, sanitary, hygienic state for us to remove, otherwise removal will be refused. Keep access routes clear, and our team will remove from room of choice. If more than one mattress needs to be collected, please contact us at 0333 123 0892.
Mattresses are carefully deconstructed and materials are identified. Once the outer fabric and polymer layers have been carefully cut and peeled away, then the exposed steel springs can then baled and sent to a metal re-processor who will recover the steel in order to manufacture new products.
Steel is re-smelted and the Polypropylene is reprocessed to manufacture new plastic products and not needlessly landfilled or incinerated .
Foam or memory foam, gets re-crumbed and processed into carpet underlay or to manufacture items such as pet beds. Every element of the mattress is sorted into material groups such as steel, polyester, cotton & wool, before being pre-treated and stored, ready for manufacturing new items such as insulation, underlay and furniture padding.
Of course, you can always give your mattress a second chance by donating to a charity if it’s in great condition. Certain charities accept old mattresses as donations, so is a great way of giving your old mattress to someone who needs it most.
1 in 10 people in poverty don’t own a bed, which is why we work with Zarach – a sleep charity committed to supporting families to make every house a home.
Finally, there is always the trip to a local recycling facility, which is a great cost effective option, but may be time consuming, hard to find, and does not guarantee your old mattress would not end up in landfill.
