The secret to a great night's sleep

Choosing the right 'Tog' for you - Part One

Deciding on the right duvet for you can be tricky. With lots of different types on offer, the choice can often result in poorly researched purchases. Follow our handy guide for some top tips, or rather, Tog Tips, to ensure your next duvet purchase is right for you.

What is a Tog?

The Tog is a scale of warmth in a duvet, not to be confused with its thickness. It measures the effectiveness of a material's thermal insulation, i.e. its ability to trap warmth from the body.

Different products work best at different times of year

Togs range from 1 Tog through to 15 Tog so a duvet that traps and provides heat in winter (13.5 Tog), is likely to make you overheat in summer. It's important to have different products, so that you can adapt.

Know your natural fillings…

Down pillows and duvets use lighter, smaller, fluffier feathers collected from the breast area of the bird. Feathers are heavier than down, larger and more substantial - but not as expensive. A combination of the two can provide a balance.

What about synthetic fillings?

Technological advancements mean synthetic bedding is now better than ever. Hollow fibres vary according to the blend of materials, the size of the holes within the fibres, and the manufacturing process, which can actively blow air into the fibres, thereby increasing their softness. In some duvets, materials can even wick away moisture from the body, making them ideal for the summer.

How do the fillings work?

Natural filled duvets trap air to retain heat, creating a light, warm and comfortable duvet. They usually feel lighter than synthetic duvets, but insulate far better. Synthetic duvets are far more durable and better suited to being washed regularly.
