Always find yourself checking your social media accounts as you get into bed, or first thing when you wake up in the morning? You're not alone. In a recent study, we discovered that a whopping 28% of couples admit to checking their social media first thing - over paying attention to their partner! With Valentine's Day now in full swing, are you guilty of this rather unromantic activity?
It's not surprising when you also take into account that our study told us a staggering 43% of Brits admitted that they're 'addicted' to social media.
Our resident sleep expert, Dr Nerina Ramlakhan said: "It's concerning to see how much time people are spending on social media, particularly before they go to sleep. The blue light that phones emit is hugely detrimental to our sleep and exposure to it, particularly before bedtime, tricks the brain into thinking it's awake. This dramatically affects our ability to fall asleep and the quality of sleep we end up getting.''
If you're based in London, the results also indicated that you're spending 3.1 hours a day scrolling through your phone - including checking social accounts, on average 10 times a day! That's a lot of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to digest.
Dr Nerina continued: "The impact on relationships is even more worrying. We need to recognise the important benefits of the hormone Oxytocin, which is released when we feel loved and is a vital ingredient for good, restorative sleep. Simply putting down your phone and cuddling up to your partner is enough to trigger Oxytocin's sleep inducing power. More Oxytocin, plus less exposure to blue light is a great place to start if you're having problems with your sleep; so put down your phone and focus on your partner!"
If you're looking to break the Social Media addiction this Valentine's Day, don't worry, we've got your back. We discovered that 50% of people would love for their partner to take them out for a romantic dinner and 22% would appreciate breakfast in bed. So there's no excuse for keeping those romantic traditions and treating your loved one this February the 14th and beyond!
