The secret to a great night's sleep

Get the kids off to sleep for a Silentnight this Christmas!

Santa is almost here, and nobody is more excited than the kids! The Christmas period with your children is magical, but all the fun and festivities in the run-up to Santa's visit can mean it's difficult to get them to drift off at bedtime - leaving some very tired children the next day.

We all want to give our children the best possible Christmas, and avoid tears and tantrums at bedtime, so Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, Silentnight's sleep expert, has the secret to ensuring you and your little ones get a great night's sleep.

The key is to ensure that body and sleep pattern remain in a set routine, to ensure the body is able to rest and recover.

Here are Silentnight sleep expert, Dr Nerina's top tips for a restful night's sleep this Christmas:

  • Keep them active - get them outdoors and into nature as much possible especially when there is sunshine to ensure they feel more tired in the evening
  • Minimise stimulation in the 90 minutes before bed time - introduce low lighting, close the sweet tin, and watch a relaxing family Christmas movie together
  • Give them a warm milky drink with crackers and nut butter before bed to optimise tryptophan production, which encourages sleep.  Almond milk is very good too
  • Start the wind down routine earlier, especially if they read before going to bed. Give them more time to relax and fall asleep
  • Practice tough love - schedule a time to open presents and if they delay going to sleep and start playing up then add this time to the scheduled time. For example, for every minute delay the presents will be opened 10 minutes later

Practice these habits as soon as you can before Christmas to get them into the rhythm.
