
In the North Yorkshire town of Skipton Tom and Joan Clarke created ‘Clarke’s Mattresses Limited’ and so it all began...

Tom and Joan officially registered ‘Clarke’s Mattresses Limited ‘and the business continued to grow!

The company was thriving in producing high quality beds and demand eventually lead to operations being moved to Barnoldswick in 1949.

Clarke’s Mattresses had a name change in 1951 and Silentnight Limited was officially born!

Silentnight continued to grow at such a rapid rate that we moved to our current premises in 1961 and it’s here we reside to this day!

With business continuing to grow the decision was made to extend the current showroom in Salterforth so we could showcase more of our products to the public.

We cemented our position as the UK’s number one bed brand and by 1986 we had created the ‘Ultimate spring system’ which was later renamed Miracoil.
We launched the 'Ultimate Spring System' - the first new spring system in the UK for over three decades. To demonstrate the ultimate spring system's unique no-roll together properties, we introduced our two new brand icons, Hippo & Duck. Through entertaining and informative TV advertising Hippo and Duck became instantly recognisable and are still loved by the public today.

A refreshed identity followed as the brand became more recognisable. New contemporary illustrations of Hippo and Duck were created and used across all marketing platforms.
We aired our brand new animated TV advert featuring the voices of Jane Horrocks and Clive Rowe and set to a specially reworked version of Hot Chocolate’s ‘You Sexy Thing’ - I Believe In Miracoil’s.

We introduced filled products into our range including pillows, duvets, toppers, mattress protectors and electric blankets. It is now estimated that 1 in 5 people in the UK sleep on a Silentnight pillow.

2004 saw us achieve Superbrand status for the very first time! It reiterated to the trade that Silentnight offered consumer choice, quality, comfort and support, whilst constantly innovating to produce the ultimate bed selection.

Continuing to branch further out ‘convenience’ was becoming a strong word and in 2008 we launched Mattress Now which was our first ever rolled mattress.
We launched more TV advertising this time sponsoring the hugely popular American Idol. This allowed us peak time slots on ITV2, once again projecting our brand to the nation!

In 2012 our brand identity was updated to reflect our focus on quality and new product offerings. This came under our ‘Quality sleep solutions for all the Family’ as a brand you can trust.

Following our rebrand our logo was redesigned to reflect a more contemporary and premium feel. We also updated our fleet of Silentnight trucks!

2012 was also the year of our very first Which? Award! The award represented our Mattress-Now zone 3 rolled mattress.

Launching the new Healthy Growth collection. Our aim, to help kids sleep safe and sound.
In 2012, we launched the new Mirapocket offer. The stunning new Diamond collection, was first unveiled at the 2012 bed show.
A ground-breaking year as we introduced our new Geltex inside concept. A level of comfort never felt before!

We teamed up with Dreams Come True later that year for the London marathon. Two members of the Dreams Come True team ran in the Hippo and Duck suits to raise money!

With the company continuing to thrive we became official sponsors for Lancashire County Cricket Club!

David Cameron visits the Barnoldswick factory and formally acknowledges our award winning apprenticeship programme. This generated and was ITV ‘s lead new story of the day.

Awarded Brand of the Year for the UK Furniture - Beds category at the prestigious 2014 World Branding Awards.We were among 69 brands from 25 countries.
Achievements was the key word for 2015. Olympic gold medallist Jo Pavey became the face of our campaign designed around what you can achieve on a great night’s sleep.
2015 brought the launch of our company vision. Our focus under this vision was to offer market leading quality, first class customer service and continuous innovation.

Our dedicated customer services team are on hand to help for every step of your purchase including any questions you may have on aftercare. As well as being available 5 days a week our team are members of the Institute of customer services so you can be assured of professional and experienced advice.

Our new and approved safe night’s cot bed mattress was relaunched in 2015 and has won numerous awards in the nursery category

Our industry recognised apprenticeship programme has generated over 40 full time jobs and attracted tremendous support from the industry and government ministers.

With quality, service and innovation being at the forefront of 2016 we have gained Superbrand status for the 11th year running!

Silentnight achieves two best buys in the 2016 review for Mattress-now 3 zone and our Mirapocket 1200.

Our new consumer advertising campaign using real life consumer quotes to share their secret to a great night’s sleep. It created a huge buzz both in the national press and social media!

In 2016 we launched our new Sleep Centre concept. Featuring our new Platinum collection and premium instore point of sale solution to showcase the best of Silentnight in independent retailers.

Our second flagship showroom at intu Lakeside opened in May of 2018. We now have showrooms in both the North and South of the UK.
