Moon Milk is a warm drink that has long been used as a remedy for sleeplessness. Made from a mix of spices, honey and milk, the drink is derived from the ancient practice of Ayuverdic, a form of holistic medicine originating more than 3,000 years ago. Studies have shown that the Ayuverdic spices used in the drink, especially ashwagandha, help to improve sleep quality and lower stress levels. Warming, calming and sleep-aiding; moon milk is exactly what you need at the end of a long day.
The recipe (from Bon Appetit)
- 1 cup whole milk or unsweetened nut milk
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground turmeric
- ¼ tsp ground ashwagandha
- 2 pinches of ground cardamom
- Pinch of ground ginger
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tsp virgin coconut oil
- 1 tsp honey
Bring milk to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk in cinnamon, turmeric, ashwagandha, cardamom, ginger, and nutmeg; season with pepper. Whisk vigorously to incorporate any clumps. Add coconut oil, reduce heat to low, and continue to cook until warmed through, 5–10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in honey. Pour into a mug, drink warm, and climb right into bed.
