Mattress quality may be deployed in cars
02/02/2012
Everyday car use and long journeys may be made a little more comfortable in the future, after a car seat company in America has teamed up with a mattress manufacturer to produce a new car seat.
The concept, called ComfortThin, is a collaboration between Johnson Controls and Harrison Spinks, who are looking to design a seat using pocketed coil spring mattress technology instead of the conventional urethane foam pads. If successful, cars from 2015 could use the technology to improve interior comfort as well as providing environmental benefits.
Andreas Eppinger, Johnson Controls vice president of technology management, said: "Leveraging the Harrison Spinks pocketed coil spring mat technology allows us to offer a seating concept with an unrivalled level of support that contours to the vehicle occupant’s body for short- and long-term comfort."
The active seating surface will adapt to passengers posture to allow for a more comfortable ride. The new technology is comparable to the Miracoil 7 mattresses, which is enhanced to provide targeted support in the bedroom.
