Some things you may not know about sleep Most people recognise the importance of sleep, according to Jean Corriveau, author of Sleep Well, Live Well: My Passionate Journey For Better Sleep. So here are some things that you may not know:

During a rocking chair marathon Randy Gardner managed to stay awake for 264 hours (eleven days), breaking the previous record held by Tom Rounds of 260 hours. Gardner reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses after the sustained period.

It is impossible to tell whether someone is awake or sleeping without close medical supervision. People can even take naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it.

It is thought that the ideal time it should take to fall asleep is between ten and 15 minutes. Anything less than five minutes shows that you are sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation can cause serious health implications, such as diabetes and heart conditions.

During your life, you will spend a third of your time in bed, which is why getting a good mattress and creating a comfortable bedroom environment is so important.
