What keeps Britain awake?

A new survey has revealed the top factors that keep Britain awake, finding that financial stress was top of the list for most sleepers, according to a Premier Inn survey.
Some 37 per cent of people who responded to the survey said that money worries were the main cause of a sleepless night, with a further 30 per cent citing work issues. These concerns far outweighed being too hot or too cold, and even topped sleep deprivation due to a partner who snores.
Sunday was revealed to be the worst night's sleep because of worries over the week ahead. The most likely time to wake up is between two and three in the morning.
Many people try to combat sleep by making the bedroom comfortable, with a good bed and suitable mattress. However, there are few things that won’t quell sleeplessness: Alcohol does not aid sleep, and cigarettes should also be avoided. Reading, music and television can stimulate the mind, and may therefore be sleep deterrents.
Over 2,000 adults were questioned in the survey. Claire Haigh, spokeswoman for Premier Inn, said: "Dwelling on things at night when you are already tired can make things seem a lot worse than they are.
"It is important to relax and switch off before bed so we get the good night's sleep we need."
