Rest is an essential part of exercise

06/01/2012

Rest is an essential part of exercise Many of you will no doubt have started 2012 with the intention of getting fit, but one expert notes that rest can be just as important as exercise.

Charlotte Watts, nutritional therapist and yoga teacher from de-stressyourlife.com, explained that everyone needs time to relax after a hectic workout.

"That's when we recover, that's when stress hormones are able to come down again and that's when the body can heal and recuperate things like muscle and brain cells," she continued.

One thing to bear in mind is that the body will find it hard to constantly keep running at a high level, Ms Watts said, so heading to bed or relaxing for a while will be beneficial.

The expert, who also wrote the De-Stress Diet in conjunction with Anna Magee, highlighted that spontaneous movement is one of the best ways to keep fit, as this will also keep stress hormones as low as possible.
