Sleep-texting results from growing stress levels
23/11/2011
Rising stress levels have led to an increase in the number of people sending text messages while they are asleep, experts have found.
Many people opt to keep a mobile phone next to their bed, which they sub-consciously reach for during the night, explained Dr David Cunnington of the Melbourne Sleep Disorder Centre.
It is argued that the process of texting has become lodged in people's minds much in the same way they can drive or type without considering each individual motion.
"We have had patients who have reported sending text messages to their friends and family while asleep," explained Dr Cunnington.
He emphasised, however, that the trend is still far from common and is simply "one of those things that happens".
Sammy Margo, sleep expert and author of the Good Sleep Guide, recently said that people should set themselves a routine to ensure they fully wind down before getting into bed.
