10/11/2011
Children's beds are often surrounded by large amounts of electrical items, which could be putting their safety at risk.
This is according to a new survey from AA Home Emergency Response that showed eight per cent of children under seven are rarely or never supervised when using electrical devices.
For youngsters between the ages of seven and ten, this figure rises to 20 per cent and to 63 per cent for 14 to 16-year-olds.
Adults were found to be setting children a bad example, as more than 2.2 million plug ten or more electrical items into a single wall socket.
Tom Stringer, head of AA Home Emergency Response, said: "Electrical fires are a very real danger if people are not using electrical appliances responsibly.
"It is of particular concern that with children using so many electrical appliances."
The survey found that many children's bedrooms are potential danger zones as the result of poor wiring.
