Mattress recycling facilities to be boosted in Wales
09/11/2011
People throughout Wales are to be given greater access to mattress recycling facilities as a result of government funding.
Three councils have so far been granted funding, putting the cash towards a variety of different schemes.
Rhondda Cynon Taff will be welcoming the mattress recycling centre, which should be able to keep as many as 1,000 mattresses out of landfill every week.
Welsh environment minister John Griffiths commented: "Everyone in Wales can be proud of the way in which we have transformed ourselves from a low-recycling country to leading the UK."
He revealed that there are economic motivations for improving mattress recycling services, as an extra £50 million in landfill costs will be incurred by 2014 if current levels are maintained.
By recycling 70 per cent of waste, local authorities will be able to save a minimum of £8 million a year compared to 2010.
