Cherry juice could be the answer to great sleep
02/11/2011
Regularly drinking a glass of cherry juice can help improve the quality of sleep people get in their beds at night, research has shown.
Experts at the School of Life Sciences at Northumbria University found that cherry juice improves levels of melatonin in the body, which is a naturally occurring hormone that regulates sleep.
The study involved 20 volunteers, who were required to drink 30ml of either tart cherry juice or a placebo juice twice a day over the course of a week.
All the participants were required to give a urine sample before and during the study to see how much melatonin was present in their bodies.
Results showed that people who consumed the cherry juice spent around 15 more minutes in bed and 25 minutes were added to their total sleep time.
They were also found to report less daytime napping compared to their usual resting habits.
