Lack of mattress support ''can impair daily function''

Lack of mattress support ''can impair daily function'' Sleeping on a comfortable bed has important implications for how well people function the following day, according to a bed technology expert.

Fidgeting during the night is a sign of disturbed sleep, often the result of the body not being properly supported, claims a Teme Valley spokesperson.

In addition to investing in a supportive mattress, good bed linen can also improve sleep quality, he claimed.

Silk duvets are "brilliant" because they are temperature controlled and "keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer", he noted. "They are also a lot more healthy because dust mites can't get in them."

Recent research presented at the annual Chest 2011 meeting by the American College of Chest Physicians suggested that lack of sleep could be particularly detrimental for teenagers.

Shorter sleep duration in teenage boys was linked to higher body mass index levels in boys, while fewer than eight hours of sleep per night was linked to weight gain across both sexes.
