Kids are in need of a bedtime routine
26/09/2011
Establishing a bedtime routine for children is essential if they are to get the quality and quantity of shut-eye they need.
It can be all too tempting for youngsters to stay up watching TV or playing computer games as they lie in their children's beds, which may not be conducive to quality rest.
Every family will have a slightly different routine, so it is crucial to tailor a bedtime schedule to whatever else may be going on in a household.
Going to bed just after eating, for example, makes it difficult to doze off, so at least two hours needs to elapse between a meal and hitting the sack.
Although children do need to get adequate exercise, they need to be starting to wind down when it comes to bedtime, therefore illustrating the need to avoid strenuous activity.
Latest data from the Health Survey for England shows that three in ten children between the ages of two and 15 are classed as either overweight or obese.
