Sleep training babies often subject to debate
13/09/2011
Knowing whether or not to sleep train a baby is often a difficult decision to make, especially when there is so much conflicting guidance on the issue.
All sorts of theories have been developed over the years, with some experts recommending that parents leave babies crying themselves to sleep in their children's beds.
Others may suggest a more hands-on approach, such as giving the infant plenty of cuddles before settling them down for the night.
Dr Luisa Dillner advises parents to do whatever they feel most comfortable with, as there is always the option to change tactic if it proves not to work.
Reading research on the subject may help parents come to a decision, she told the Guardian, but the main thing is for both the mother and father to be adopting the same strategy.
University of Melbourne researchers recently said that parents whose children are unable to sleep should consider going to counselling sessions.
