Doctors could help alleviate sleep problems
11/08/2011
Going to the doctor with a sleep-related problem is often avoided, but medical professionals may have some solutions.
The odd night of interrupted sleep is perhaps not a good enough reason to make an appointment, but prolonged difficulties with dozing off may warrant a check-up.
Certain symptoms such as excessive snoring while lying on a mattress and daytime tiredness could be indicative of a wider health problem.
Fatigue and irritability are also considered as indicators of a sleep disorder, which can be treated through a variety of methods.
The only person who can tell whether their sleep is being disrupted is the individual themselves, so any noticeable changes need to be flagged up with a healthcare professional.
Research from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and California Pacific Medical Center recently identified that sleep apnoea sufferers may be at an increased risk of dementia.
