Second-hand mattresses usually best avoided
22/07/2011
Getting hold of a second-hand mattress is generally not advisable, as people can never be too sure what sort of environment it has come from.
Although it may be tempting to save some cash with a used model, it is likely that the mattress will need to be replaced much sooner than if it was purchased brand new.
Potential hazards contained in second-hand mattresses include bed bugs, which are often difficult to see and can lead to really uncomfortable night's sleep.
Bed bugs also have a habit to clinging onto other items and wreaking havoc all over the home, which will prove costly to rectify.
Springs inside the mattress may not be fully functional, potentially leading to back pain as the mattress is unable to support the body throughout the night.
The Restoration Industry Association recently advised holidaymakers to check their cases for bed bugs before they travel home, as the creatures may be hiding in their clothes.
