Children''s beds could help kids be independent

22/07/2011

Children''s beds could help kids be independent Kids cannot stay in their cots forever, so purchasing a children's bed is the first step towards giving them some independence.

Parents can still take on a role at bedtime, such as by reading the child a story, tucking them into bed or taking them a warm glass of milk, but there comes a stage when they need to step back.

Youngsters need to recognise certain signs that tell them it is time to sleep, such as the dimming of the lights or the sound of relaxing music, so parents should perhaps build up a bedtime routine.

Encouraging a child to get into a new bed may come as no easy task, so putting items they are familiar with - such as soft toys or a favourite duvet cover - can make the transition much easier.

The American Academy of Paediatrics recently claimed that children over the age of one who share a bed with their parents are not at risk of developmental or behavioural problems.
