Unhygienic bed linen ''a real issue''
06/07/2011
Unhygienic bed sheets are a reality for many people, as they fail to recognise just how many bugs and bacteria are nestling within their linen.
Mattress pads are among the biggest harbourers of bugs, the SleepBetter.org Investigates: Fungus Among Us study found, as two million potential bacteria colonies can exist.
Men were found to have pillows that are twice as infested with microbes as women, as researchers found 480,000 bacteria counts compared to 290,000.
"Given the potential health issues associated with these microorganisms, this study should serve as a wake-up call for anyone with old bedding, whether or not in college, to throw them out," commented Dr Lisa Shives, a physician and expert in sleep medicine.
Humid nights and using the wrong bed linen has led many people to lose sleep over recent weeks, Travelodge recently found, so it advised replacing a duvet with a lightweight sheet.
