US city welcomes mattress disposal regulations
30/06/2011
Residents of one US city are soon to welcome a new mattress disposal scheme, in order to convince people to get rid of their mattresses responsibly.
As of August 1st, every mattress or box spring that is thrown away in Providence will be subject to a $20 (£12) fee, a scheme that has so far proved a success in other cities.
Residents will have to schedule a pick-up for their mattress, otherwise they will be faced with a fine of between $50 and $500 for leaving it at the roadside.
However, anyone who drops their mattress off themselves at the Department of Public Works will not be subject to the $20 charge.
Disposal experts in the capital of Rhode Island are likely to find they are dealing with a wide range of different mattress types, as not everyone will benefit from the same model of bed.
