Vancouver Canucks monitoring bed rest for better performance
08/06/2011
Getting a good night's bed rest is important for everybody, and Canada's premier ice hockey team is using the science of sleep to raise their chances of bringing home the Stanley Cup this week.
The Vancouver Canucks have enlisted the services of Pat Byrne, co-founder of Fatigue Science, who is using high-tech wristwatches to monitor and record the team's sleep quality from night to night.
Mr Byrne explained: "It turns sleep data into performance data.
"It shows how their reaction times change during games."
As well as dictating their bed habits, the data is also used to coordinate the teams' hydration and light exposure to keep them at their optimum levels before a game.
With this additional help, the Canucks are no doubt sleeping more soundly in their beds as they dream of taking the Stanley Cup.
The team has advanced to the cup finals three times in its history, but has never managed to bring home the prize.
