Set rules for disobedient kids at bedtime
19/05/2011
It is a fact of life that some kids will refuse to get in their children's beds at night, which may require some parents to be strict when it gets to bedtime.
Sleep is essential for children to remain functional and it also helps them stay ahead at school, so parents have plenty of incentive to ensure they get enough shut-eye.
Being strict before bed may include banning TV for a set period before it is time to doze off, as this can lead to disruptions to the body clock and make it even harder for youngsters to sleep.
One strategy that should perhaps be avoided is sending them to bed early, as this may exacerbate the tantrums and lead to yet more sleepless nights for all involved.
Experts at Columbia University recently warned that children from urban minority backgrounds are more likely to be reluctant to go to bed than other kids.
