South Wales residents offered mattress recycling scheme
13/05/2011
An initiative has been launched in Rhondda Cynon Taf to enable residents to put their old mattresses to good use, a report reveals.
It is estimated that every week, 300 old mattresses are sent to the region's tip, with the vast majority of them unable to biodegrade.
As a result, the local council's Streetcare team and Amgen Cymru have joined forces to offer a recycling scheme, WalesOnline states, which will transform the mattresses into useful materials.
Community recycling centres throughout the area will be accepting the mattresses before they are transported to the Amgen Cymru facility where they will be stripped and recycled.
The Sleep Council recently highlighted that people who have owned their mattress for a long time but are not ready to replace it should consider giving it a spring clean.
It advised that vacuum cleaners should be avoided, as they can dislodge springs and filling.
