Avoid reading from an iPad in bed, experts say
27/04/2011
Using technology in bed is generally advised against, but avid readers may particularly want to avoid the Apple iPad, if experts are to be believed.
Devices such as the Kindle use e-paper technology, which simulates the appearance of a real book by not emitting any light.
The iPad, on the other hand, has a touchscreen liquid-crystal display that gives off light, which could interfere with the body's release of melatonin.
In fact, some experts have compared using an iPad before bed to watching TV, mainly because of the response the brain has to the light emitted from the screen.
The 2011 Sleep in America poll from the National Sleep Foundation found that people of all generations are not resting properly due to the use of technology at bedtime.
"This study reveals that light-emitting screens are in heavy use within the pivotal hour before sleep," explained Charles Czeisler, from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
