US takes steps to make toddler beds safer
19/04/2011
A number of new safety requirements have been outlined in the US in a bid to make beds safer for toddlers.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved the changes, which build upon existing standards used in the construction of beds for infants.
Among the changes is that the upper edge of a guard rail must now be a minimum of five inches above the toddler's mattress, and that additional warning labels need to be displayed.
CPSC also confirmed that the spindles and slats on these beds are to undergo rigorous testing, as is undertaken on cots.
In the UK, cots should carry the British Standards Institution number BS EN 716:2008 to ensure they are fully compliant with safety requirements.
Parents are also urged to be careful with second-hand cots and to buy new if possible to avoid any safety issues arising.
