Old mattresses ''lead to sleep deprivation''
18/04/2011
Getting hold of a new mattress is one of the easiest ways of curing many cases of sleep deprivation, two major organisations have emphasised.
The Better Sleep Council, in conjunction with the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), found that people with newer mattresses tend to get the desired seven to eight hours sleep.
Explaining the findings, ISPA president Ryan Trainer said: "Of the 53 per cent who get seven to eight hours of sleep per night, 36 per cent do so on a mattress that's one to four years old."
"Only nine per cent of Americans who own eight to ten-year-old mattresses get seven to eight hours sleep."
He emphasised that these figures speak volumes as to the role of a good quality mattress when it comes to sleep, as aches and pains can arise when trying to rest on an uncomfortable surface.
