A mattress can reduce pain, encourage sleep
24/03/2011
Every effort should be made to avoid pain while in trying to sleep, so investing in a new mattress could be just the antidote.
Sleep expert Pete Bils, a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, emphasised that rest deprivation and pain are closely linked and more so than people realise.
"Pain disturbs sleep, taking away from its restful and restorative properties. And poor sleep actually lowers our threshold for pain, perpetuating the problem cycle," he told KPVI News.
Failing to sleep properly gives rise to all manner of health problems, he explained, including everything from lethargy to weight gain and stress.
Mr Bils highlighted that "firmer is better" is not the best approach for pain sufferers, as research has shown that an excessively hard mattress can actually make the situation worse.
An article for the Daily Mail recently pointed out that sleeping well is essential for having sound mental health.
