Sleeping pods help city workers get bed rest
10/03/2011
Sleeping on the job may lose some of its stigma in the future, after pods with beds were installed on the 33rd floor of the Citigroup building.
Tired staff at the Canary Wharf location are now able to hire out one of the Podtime facilities, which consist of a two-metre tube fitted with a mattress, pillow and clock, the London Evening Standard reports.
"We've had lots of excellent feedback from people. It's something that's been a bit unspoken in the City until now," John Gray, the man behind the idea, told the newspaper.
"If people need a recharge then you do find people sleeping under desks or in toilets."
However, snoozing on the job doesn't come cheap - the pods cost £5.99 to hire for 30 minutes or £9.99 per hour.
The beds may go down well in the States, after a survey by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention found one in three Americans get less than seven hours of sleep a night.
