''Identify problems'' to resolve bed rest issues
02/03/2011
The key to getting better bed rest is to get to the bottom of any sleep issues, according to one expert.
In an interview with the Vancouver Sun, sleep doctor Adam Moscovitch said there are around 85 recognisable sleep disorders, all of which can be treated in some way.
Mechanical devices can be used to treat snoring and breathing problems, said the expert, while light treatment can be helpful for those whose bed rest condition is caused by upsets to their biological clocks.
"Sleep deprivation as a result of not sleeping as much as we need, or because of an underlying sleep disorder, is becoming quite an epidemic," Dr Moscovitch told the newspaper.
"And we are paying a very heavy price for it — both individually and as a society."
Recently, researchers at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania found that taking short naps can help to relieve high blood pressure and may be useful for people who have recently experienced stress.
