Can''t sleep? Get out of bed
27/01/2011
Lying in bed worrying about not being able to sleep should be avoided at all costs, a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has claimed.
Researchers found that people who struggle to sleep should not dwell on the issue, as this may only make it worse.
Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine surveyed 79 adults and concluded that around 50 per cent of people suffer from sleep problems.
However, they warned that getting out of bed should only be a short-term solution to the problem, as serious disorders will need medical treatment.
A piece for the Wall Street Journal recently suggested that children who suffer from sleep problems are more at risk of obesity than those who do get enough rest.
It found that around 45 per cent of those between the ages of 11 and 17 do not get the recommended eight hours sleep.
