Hospital staff pass up beds to help others
06/12/2010
Many hospital staff in the north-east of England have passed up the chance to go home to a comfy bed and mattress so they can help patients.
Although this has likely occurred all over the country, some of those who have reported on their ordeal are nursing staff from the University Hospital of North Durham.
Speaking to their local paper the Durham Times, they identified that some patients needed care throughout the night and with other medical professionals stranded, they decided to do their bit.
Kathryn Burn, who works in orthopaedics and plastic surgery, said: "Some of the late shift had had difficulty getting in and I thought there is no way I am even going to attempt to go home because I couldn't be sure I would get back in."
A similar situation was reported in Newcastle over recent days, with workers in the city's LD Mountain Centre bedded down on the shop floor after getting snowed in.
