Don''t let sleep suffer, teenagers told
03/09/2010
Many teenagers are unaware of just how crucial sleep is to their lives, an expert has said.
Jessica Alexander, spokesperson for The Sleep Council, emphasised that parents need to do all they can to encourage their youngsters to get enough shut-eye.
One of the major problems at the moment is that teenagers use technology late into the night, she explained, which can have an impact on their health.
Ms Alexander continued: "With a teenager you have to lay down rules from an early stage and it is not always easy.
"A survey we did a couple of years ago showed that there was a huge amount of equipment in teenager's bedrooms."
The Department of Community Medicine at West Virginia University recently found the risk of cardiovascular disease was more than twice as high in people who sleep five hours a day or less than those who get the recommended amount of rest.
