Hitting the snooze button? You may have a sleep disorder
16/07/2010
Reaching for the snooze button can all too often be an indicator of sleep-related problems, it has been indicated.
The Northern Light suggested that failing to get a satisfactory amount of sleep can cause all sorts of difficulties.
Loud snoring, gasping for breath and even sweating heavily can be indicators of underlying health problems and should be checked out sooner rather than later, it advised.
The article continued: "If a sleep disorder is left unchecked, the condition can worsen over time and usher in a host of life-threatening problems."
These include strokes, heart disease, increased blood pressure, diabetes and premature aging, the piece warned.
Among the most common sleep disorders are insomnia, sleep apnoea and narcolepsy, it added, so people should be sure to get their conditions checked out.
In recent days, the American Heart Association announced it had determined a link between heart disease and sleep apnoea.
