Gaultier turns to bed design
16/07/2010
Beds are not usually the forte of the French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, but he recently swapped sailor suits and stripes for wardrobes and bedroom furniture.
He has teamed up with furniture house Roche Bobois to create a range of pieces to celebrate the firm''s 50th anniversary.
Gaultier has come up with a few interesting ideas for the company, including a combined bed and screen, a mirror, chair and suitcases.
In addition, the designer has imparted a nautical theme onto a reworking of Hans Hopfer''s famous Mah Jong modular sofa.
"One finds my three big loves in this collection - corsets, sailor stripes and tattoos. It has a feeling of a boudoir and is very sensual," he told the Independent.
The newspaper says that Gaultier is not the only fashion designer having a go at designing interiors, citing the example of clothes designers Bruno Basso and Chris Brooke of Basso & Brooke who have also launched their own interiors range.
In addition to Gaultier and Hopfer, Roche Bobois boasts an impressive array of designers, including Christophe Delcourt, Luigi Gorgoni and Cedric Raghot.
