Bedding change ''can help alleviate asthma symptoms''
08/06/2010
Making the right bedding choices for children with asthma can have a positive impact on their condition, new research reveals.
Conducted by the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre, the study found that combating dust mites can help lower the level of irritation for asthma sufferers.
In the experiment, 58 babies slept on vinyl mattresses, which were then treated with acracide to eradicate the presence of dust mites.
The other group of youngsters had no changes made to their bedding throughout the study.
Study author Dr Martha Scott commented: "It is possible to prevent the onset of asthma in high-risk individuals by instituting a strict regime that avoids some of the common triggers for asthma in the first year of life."
This follows research from the department of psychiatry at Penn State University published earlier this week, which showed that unusual sleep breathing patterns may be affected by the seasons.
