Reading in bed ''gives kids a headstart in school''
10/05/2010
Reading a book to kids at bedtime is not only a great way to bond with children, but can also lead to a life of reading for pleasure, it has been said.
Helen Rowe, head of library and information services in North Lincolnshire, said the act of sharing a story together in bed additionally helps a child to increase attention spans and develop language skills, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.
"Children who have the experience of books and stories in their first five years are quicker to learn to read when they start school than those who do not," she told the newspaper.
Ms Rowe''s comments follow those of Miranda McKearney, director of the Reading Agency, who recently urged parents to remember the huge resources available to them in their local libraries.
She encouraged more libraries to come up with ways to support parents by holding classes and workshops on reading in bed.
