Children ''missing out on books in bed''

Children ''missing out on books in bed'' Today''s kids are missing out on their bedtime stories as they relax on their mattresses at night, a new survey has found.

The Oxford University Press study, which polled 300 teachers, found that more than half of them have taught children who have never been read a story in bed.

Many children were only aware of fairy tales that they had seen on television or in Disney cartoons, the findings revealed.

Literacy expert Pie Corbett said that the problem is not restricted to children from disadvantaged economic backgrounds.

"You get a lot of children coming from very privileged backgrounds who''ve spent a lot of time in front of the TV and not enough time snuggled up with a good book," he said.

However, bedtime stories seem to be on the minds of the nation''s adults, after a survey by Carte Noire found that seven out of ten men regularly read aloud to their partners in bed.
