Bedrooms ''must feel like sanctuary''
26/04/2010
People must ensure they harness every trick in the book to make their bedroom feel comfortable, relaxing and safe, as otherwise sleep will be hindered, an expert interior designer has asserted.
Marni Jameson, a syndicated columnist speaking to the Arizona Daily Star, said this should begin through the use of colours that soothe a person, as bold colours can overwhelm people.
Instead, cool colours can instil tranquillity, though warm colours also allow the room to feel upbeat.
"Simplicity, function and light" are also important, as everything in the room needs to work if the owner is to feel in control; this is particularly successfully realised with adjustable lighting and a mixture of overhead lights as well as table lamps and night lights.
Finally, fabrics must nurture a person, being both durable and washable, as well as produced with a high thread count, such as 300-thread Egyptian cotton.
In a recent piece for the Kane County Chronicle, Shirley Nichol and Nancy Reinke explained that interior designers say it is all about "lighting, lighting, lighting" in the bedroom and it is "one of the most overlooked areas in the average home".
