Modern beds are ''huge luxury'' compared to predecessors

While mattresses these days are much more comfortable for the average Joe, it was simply not the case back in the day, as one historically-minded source has pointed out.
The Ledger explained: "Spend just one night on old-fashioned bedding at a historical site and you will find whole new appreciation for your meticulously engineered, individually adjustable, pillow-topped bed."
It argued that sleeping on an old offering is akin to resting on "lumpy, cloth-covered rock", as basic spring-coil mattresses were not invented until the 1860s, with US pioneers bedding down instead on stuffed sacks.
These used thick, canvas-like cotton cloth referred to as ticking and were held together by small stitches, made to the dimensions that a family needed before being stuffed with straw or possibly retted moss.
Earlier this month, it was concluded by the Osceola Sentinel Tribune that sleep quality on a mattress could be enhanced by a quick tidy up in the bedroom.
