Half of Brit kids ''will never hear a bedtime story'' New research has been published that shows nearly one in two children will never hear a bedtime story.

Figures published by Silentnight have shown that nearly three quarters of parents are too embarrassed to read to their own children, while half of kids aged under 12 watch DVDs in bed.

Carrie Longton, founder of acclaimed community Mumsnet.com, has backed the companies'' Book At Bedtime competition and the value of reading to children.

She said: "As more and more mums are running around and rushed off their feet, taking 20 minutes to read to your children at night is a fantastic way to spend quality time with your children."

Ms Longton added that this can present a great chance for people to let their inhibitions go and really get involved with the story, saying that in no time at all even the most timid of readers will find themselves doing the characters'' voices.

Last year''s Book at Bedtime winner was Aled Jones, who wrote a tale about a hippo and duck titled Zoo Animals.
