Lack of time in bed ''leads to health consequences''

People are not spending enough time in bed and are suffering health consequences as a result, an expert has claimed.
Dr Mohammed Pathan, from St Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, has told the Catholic Review that a growing number of distractions in the bedroom are leading people to neglect the amount of sleep they require.
He said: "People don''t realise how important sleep is and what the health consequences are of not getting a good night''s sleep on a regular basis. We are giving more importance to activities other than sleep."
Dr Pathan highlighted the fact that, while the amount of time each person needs in bed varies, it is important to get the right amount.
Among the key tips he suggested to improve people''s sleep are to set up a bedroom to be dark, quiet, comfortable and cool.
A recent study by Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre director professor Jim Horner has found that sleepiness through the day can have a strongly detrimental effect.
