Sleepiness during the day is ''key concern''

Sleepiness during the day is ''key concern'' It is very easy to find out whether or not you are getting enough sleep on an evening, one sleep expert has emphasised.

Professor Jim Horne, the director of Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre, said that the test of whether or not you are getting the right amount of rest in bed on a night is if you are groggy throughout most of the day.

He noted that most people who complain about insomnia are not actually sleepy throughout the day, meaning that they may be getting more rest than they give themselves credit for.

Professor Horne underlined how people are on the go for long periods of time and do not give themselves time to unwind, and when they get to bed they "just unwind" when trying to get sleep and people cannot do both at once.

He said of this demographic: "They are likely to get a bit more than they realise but they start worrying about whether or not they are getting enough sleep - whether that is going to make them ill, or mad and a lot of this has been blown out of all proportion."

The average person in the UK sleeps for only six hours and seven minutes per night, which is well below the traditionally-recommended eight hours, a survey by QVC recently revealed.
