Children''s beds ''should be bright and colourful'' Michael Ewing

Making children''s beds as bright as possible can be a good way of encouraging them to play there rather than in their parents'', an expert has claimed.

Designer Myriam de Loor, who also teaches crafts in Paris, tells the Daily Telegraph that the best way to encourage this is to put a lot of work into making their bedroom seem exciting.

She said that she and her husband built a sleeping platform in their children''s room in order to make them more likely to play on their own mattresses.

"We built the island to try and persuade the boys not to come into our bed at night. We''ve only been in this place for a year and I think it''s beginning to work," she explained.

Those looking to create a romantic bedroom for themselves should follow the McClatchy-Tribune''s Mi-Ling Stone Poole, who has suggested incorporating candles into the bedroom.

Having a soft and cosy throw and using dimmer switches can also work together to create a more relaxing ambience.
