People should only sleep ''when tired''

People should only sleep ''when tired'' Going to bed only when sleepy is one of the best ways to approach the concept of good rest, according to an expert in a new report.

Oneindia''s Priya Devi R explained that people must reduce the time they are awake on the bed "twisting and turning" as the simple thought that a person is not getting sleep will itself push sleep back.

Reading has been known to "invite sleep very easily", the expert continued, while the avoidance of taking naps during the day could also stave off good-quality rest. If necessary, people are asked to sleep for less than an hour during the afternoons at most.

In terms of ambience, listening to soft music can help the brain to slow down. By avoiding bright lights during bedtime, people will find themselves feeling much more relaxed.

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, recently found that younger adults who get too much or too little sleep may see their waistlines expand.
