Glasgow teachers to teach children how to get most out of sleep
03/03/2010
A unique project will see Glasgow City Council teaming up with a sleep counsellor to give lessons for teenagers on how to avoid distractions and get the most out of their bed on a night.
It follows a number of concerns from the council over worries that pupils are increasingly unable to get the nine hours of sleep a night that they require to aid learning, while also maintaining a relaxing and happy lifestyle, the Herald revealed.
Four schools, including Govan High, Bellahouston Academy and St Paul''s Secondary, will accept the skills of Nikki Cameron, who will teach basic techniques in the classroom.
She said that people cannot be macho about sleep as surviving on four hours of rest is not a virtue.
Ms Cameron told the newspaper: "Sleep is important for emotional and physical wellbeing and also for a young person learning, because that is when memories are processed, and the brain can store the learning."
Parents worried about their young ones'' sleep have been told by the NHS to ensure their offspring get good exercise and talk to them about anything that may worry them.
