Sound and vision is ''no gift'' for sleep

Sound and vision is ''no gift'' for sleep People who believe they are going to get sleep while things are running noisily in the background are mistaken in their beliefs, according to a sleep expert.

Speaking to syndicated columnist Mami Jameson, spokeswoman for the Better Sleep Council Nancy Butler said that people need the highest level of calm achievable in the home when hitting their bed on an evening.

Ms Butler said that if you cannot achieve total silence, such as when living or sleeping near a busy road or close to loud wildlife, people may want to wear earplugs or get a sound-masking device as "steady, unbroken sound" is necessary.

Additionally, by turning off the TV is very beneficial as it interferes with sleep, she continued. While this may not be realised by the individual, the fluctuating light and sound may mess with sleep patterns, it was added.

Recently, sleep expert Michael J Breus told the Huffington Post that sleeplessness and sleep deprivation can bring "devastation" to people, families and even society.
