Beds and mattresses ''to take inspiration from the 1950s''

People are increasingly looking to 1950s-style bedding and mattresses, taking inspiration from TV programmes such as Mad Men.
House Beautiful magazine has run with the theme for its new issue, suggesting that interiors are increasingly following the trends set out during the decade.
Among the key changes are the growing popularity of neutral-coloured furniture in the bedroom, with the beds and mattresses offset against soft, pastel coloured walls.
These rooms are increasingly being accessorised with retro products and accessories and matched with patterned fabrics and floral curtains.
Julia Goodwin, editor of House Beautiful, claims that the 1950s are back in a big way, with trade shows being characterised by spindle-backed and tapered leg austerity furniture.
She says: "Gone are the heavy varnishes and stains of yesteryear. In their place polished woods - oak, birch, elm and even bamboo - highlight the grain rather than concealing it."
Earlier this week, syndicated columnist Marni Jameson claimed that bedroom decor should be used to create an atmosphere of relaxation in the bedroom.
